What to Expect After You Make a Report to DFPS

When you report abuse or neglect to DFPS, your report goes through Statewide Intake, which is managed by the Texas Abuse Hotline. This is the main channel for most reports, whether you call or submit online.

Once your report is submitted, you’ll receive a Report Identification Number. This number is used by DFPS to track your report.

If you report online, you’ll first get a system-generated Report Identification Number to let you know your submission was received. After an intake specialist reviews and completes the report, you’ll get the official Report Identification Number by email.
If you report by phone, the intake specialist should explain the outcome of the call before it ends. They’ll let you know whether the report is being forwarded to a local DFPS office. Keep in mind that they won’t be able to share details about what actions the local office will take.

No matter how you report, online or by phone, you’ll get a notification letter once the case is closed. This letter confirms that DFPS reviewed the report, but it won’t include any detailed findings or outcomes.
